The Shins

Sunday, July 17th, 2005

I’ve never been one for finding new music on my own; I’ve generally relied on my friends to lead me in the right direction. Recently, my kids are getting me to play music on a daily basis and it’s been a lot of fun. My wife and I, who rarely listened to music, [...]

God Help Us

Sports Illustrated.com has an article about a little-league coach in the Pittsburgh area who paid one of his players to hurt a disabled teammate, just so they could win the game. I’ve heard of some egregious incidents with little-league coaches and parents, but this one wins the prize. Where is the cat o’ [...]

Pivots (Part 1)

Sunday, July 17th, 2005

In addition to writing in the blog, I’ve kept a journal off and on since college. My journal has always been a place of intimacy, a place I can be honest with myself. I’ve always found it difficult to decide what level of intimacy to take, however, when writing in a web log. [...]

Which theologian are you?

Saturday, July 16th, 2005

After writing this post a couple of days ago, I still felt the need to do something. After reading a couple of articles on the subject, one by the Associated Press and another by the Arizona Daily Star, I decided to contact the author of the second article via e-mail:

Mr. Scarpinato,
Earlier today, a little [...]

A Channel 6 news report from Florida describes how all patrons of Disney World must submit to having their fingerprints taken before entering the park.

The scans were formerly for season pass holders but now everyone must provide their fingers, Local 6 News reported. They have reportedly been phased in for all ticket holders during the [...]

Hope for Alzheimer’s Memory Recovery

Friday, July 15th, 2005

An article out today by the Associated Press describes a recently released study which gives hope that brain damage caused in the early stages of Alzheimer’s may be reversible.

New research shows a mutant protein named tau is poisoning brain cells, and that blocking its production may allow some of those sick neurons to [...]

Try your hand at this collection of Java puzzles published in the March 2003 issue of Linux Magazine.

Josh: Yep. Here’s another one. What does this loop do?
while (i != i)
;
Neal: It has to do nothing, right?
Josh: Well, no…

Planarity

Wednesday, July 13th, 2005

The goal of John Tantalo’s Planarity Flash Game is to make each graph planar by moving around nodes until no edges cross. Each level becomes progressively more difficult. I got through level 5, took a glimpse of level 6, and realized that I had other things to do.
