Who’s The Boss?

That would be my daughter Maggie. As I was loading and unloading the dishwasher, she told me where to put every dish, cup and spoon. When I put my son, her older brother, down for a nap, she followed me into his bedroom and told me where to put him. Now, she’s standing on the subwoofer next to my computer telling me what keys I should be pressing and where to move the cursor on the screen. She’s looking up at me, and using sign language she’s just said, “Daddy read more book.” Actually, it was more like, “DADDY READ MORE BOOK!” We’ve been signing with her since she was born, so she can boss us around with incredible specificity. Earlier today, for example, she signed, “Daddy more cat hat book read.” We haven’t taught her the sign for “Now!”, but it comes across emphatically anyway.
