Spotlight’s Limited Index
Mike Zornek has a post describing how Apple’s Spotlight, new in Mac-OS X version 10.4 (Tiger), is hardcoded to search in certain locations and not others. This is an interesting problem that I have run into, but haven’t had a handle on until this post.
I don’t have an issue per say with Spotlight not searching certain directories, it’s just that Apple needs to make it clear what’s being indexed and what’s not in the Spotlight System Preferences Pane. They provide a “Privacy” section where users can list directories that they don’t want to be indexed. What they need to do here is be honest and show the list of default directories that will be ignored and allow users to override the default and tell Spotlight to in fact index them.
